Innovative narrative shares the stories of how 60 Councils are making a powerful contribution to society and changing our world.
15 FEBRUARY, 2021: One Story is a celebration of the true grit of people in councils and communities, which has been shown in spades during the pandemic. These are compelling, often surprising and always moving stories of what holds people and communities together, what absolutely matters and what people need to do together to face an uncertain future.
The book shares both one story and local stories – they are about critical services like public health, highways and supporting vulnerable children and the hidden services like the registrars, who are part of the cycle of life, working with families through loss, marriage and birth. It’s also about the big challenges we face, pandemics, climate change and tackling long-standing inequalities. It creatively draws out the essence of public service and a new way forward.
“What’s different about the book is that the diverse and moving stories are used to capture the essence of public service,” said Dawn Reeves One Story curator and illustrator. “It sets out a powerful narrative, a persuasive and vital case for local government that gets under the skin.”
“We all know someone who works in our local councils, they are run by people like us, who care because they live here too. Often behind scenes good people are making a difference, these stories show how and why local approaches matter.”
“This a fantastic read, it shows local councils standing up for their communities and working alongside them to make things happen, in everyone’s interest.” Darren Caveney, Comms2point0.
One Story’s launch also coincides with the release of the Local Government Association toolkits, which examine why and how a more engaging approach to developing and communicating a narrative works, and offers practical models and approaches.
Contributors were invited to nominate a magical object to illustrate each story and each object is featured in the book and also in our campaign to launch the book, available digitally. This concept connects the story to us in different ways and deepens our understanding and impact as humans.
